Having recently purchased a countertop microwave, I embarked on a mission to build my own microwave cart. This became especially pertinent as I explored some of the best microwaves on the market, like Sunbeam and Black Decker, realizing the necessity of a sturdy stand where they can rest when not in use. As someone who loves to cook food, creating DIY microwave carts not only catered to my practical needs but also added a personal touch to my kitchen space.
What is a Microwave Cart?
A kitchen microwave cart is a versatile piece of furniture, akin to a kitchen island or a standalone table, but it’s purpose-built to house a microwave oven. These carts often come with multiple levels and accessories, like lower partitions for storage and sometimes even a microwave bowl holder. Designed to handle the weight of a microwave, they add functionality and organization to any kitchen.
How to Make a Kitchen Microwave Cart?
Creating a kitchen microwave cart is a practical way to make space in your kitchen. If you’ve recently removed a built-in microwave to switch to a countertop model, you’ll find this project handy. The options for design are numerous, from simple wooden stands to carts with additional storage. By customizing the size and materials, you can ensure the cart not only holds your microwave securely but also enhances your kitchen’s functionality and aesthetic.

Use a Bookshelf
When I embarked on creating a microwave stand, I applied my construction know-how and ingenuity to transform a pre-existing bookshelf into a functional kitchen microwave cart. Instead of opting to purchase a new piece, I repurposed the bookshelf, carefully ensuring it could fit the microwave oven on its top shelf while leaving enough room to spare for safety. By affixing the microwave with a drill, I secured it in place. The lower bookshelves were then utilized to store various cooking accessories and kitchen appliances, thus efficiently using space and adding a unique charm to my kitchen setup. This approach not only aligned with my DIY spirit but also added a personal touch to my kitchen, showcasing a blend of practicality and style.

Use a Desk or Table
In my journey of crafting a DIY kitchen microwave cart, I found a creative use for an old desk. This desk, once a mere workspace, now serves as a sturdy table for my microwave. To protect the table’s surface, I applied a layer of laminate, which guards against grease and food debris. Keeping it clean is easy; a simple wipe with a bleach solution does the trick. The space underneath the table became a perfect storage area for accessories, appliances, and food items, neatly tucked away in the cabinets. For added functionality, I installed screws and hinge pins to ensure everything stays in place. This transformation not only saved space but also brought a new level of organization and style to my kitchen.

Use Standalone Kitchen Cabinets
In my latest DIY project, I decided to use pre-existing, stand-alone kitchen cabinets to transform them into a multi-functional kitchen cart or kitchen island. Instead of opting to buy a new stand, I found multiple cabinets of the same height and placed them next to each other. Carefully, I affixed a durable countertop on top, instantly creating additional counter space. The cabinet areas beneath became perfect for storing accessories and other kitchen essentials. This approach allowed me to experiment with the layout until everything fit seamlessly. Importantly, I ensured the space on the top was big enough to accommodate my 1.6 cubic feet microwave, achieving both aesthetics and functionality in my kitchen.
How to Build a Microwave Stand Second Method?
Step 1: Cut the Shelf Pieces
For the Microwave Shelf, carefully measure and cut the pieces to the desired size. Ensure that the dimensions align with a standard 24″ cabinet width, allowing a snug fit and optimal support for your microwave.
- Use 3/4″ Plywood and a Table Saw to cutout the Bottom, Two Sides, Back, and Top panels to your desired size and dimensions for the Microwave Shelf.
- With 3/4″ Hardwood, use the Table Saw to rip 1/8″ strips for the Facing Material.
- Apply the Facing Material, Cut and Glue the Facing/Finishing Strips to the front edges of the Top Panels and Bottom Panels.
- For the Bottom Panel, after being glued with the Facing Strip, use a Band Saw to cut a notch on each side of the front edge, measuring 3/4″ x 5″, to receive the Hardwood Side Supports.
Step 2: Drill the Kregg Holes
Select the pieces from Step 1
- Using a Pocket Hole System, follow the provided images and guide to accurately drill Pocket Holes on exterior surfaces, ensuring they remain concealed between adjacent cabinet sides.
- Equip your Screw Gun with a 9/64th bit to pre-drill holes along the edges of Back Panels and Top Panels, then secure them with 1 1/2″ Wood Screws.
Step 3: Assemble the Shelf
Select the Pieces
- Attach the Bottom Panel to the Back Panels using glue and Kregg Screws for a strong base.
- Secure the two Sides to the Back and Bottom Panels with Glue, Wood Screws, and Kregg Screws for stability.
- Finally, attach the Top Panel to the Sides and Back Panels using Glue, Wood Screws, and Kregg Screws to complete the structure.
Step 4: Cut and Attach the Side Supports
Select the 3/4″ Hardwood and the assembled Pieces from Step 3
- Cut the Left/Right Side Supports from hardwood using a Band Saw to the dimensions of 5″ x 15″, following a template for any curved lines.
- Sand the curved edges of the two Supports to a smooth finish using a Belt Sander, then glue and attach them to the Bottom Panels and Side Panels using Kregg Screws.
Step 5: Finish the Microwave Shelf
Select the completed Shelf
- Perform final sanding on all surfaces to ensure a smooth finish.
- Apply Stain and Poly to the Shelf, adding multiple coats for durability and sheen.
